Art Therapy

What is art therapy?

This type of therapy uses the creative expression of art to help individuals resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness.

Art therapy is used to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.  An Art Therapist, who has been trained in both art and psychology, facilitates therapy sessions.

Can art therapy help me?

The emotional trauma caused by domestic violence, sexual assault and other life crises often times make it difficult for victims to express their feelings through words. Children who witness violence in their homes often suffer in silence. Personal expression through art can help, especially when words are not enough.

Is art therapy effective?

Yes. Over and over again our
therapists see how art therapy helps transform lives and restores a sense of hope and healing.  Here are a few testimonials from past clients:

“[Art therapy] is my inner voice.  Sometimes the art shows me what I need to look at, and sometimes it shows me what it is like to feel the way I do. It has become my best tool for expressing me.”

“The art making really relaxes me and shows me parts of me that I am proud of.”

“I love using art therapy because there is no wrong or right.  In the art studio I have so many choices of material.  For the first time in months I feel good about myself.”

Why is it beneficial?

Through art therapy clients find a new therapeutic means of expressing their experiences of trauma and abuse.  Using art, women and children are able to:

  • Express the impact of abuse on their lives
  • Envision their own unique healing process
  • Find ways to transform traumatic images and negative self-perceptions
  • Express feelings and experiences through art media
  • Work holistically to heal the wounded dimensions of their lives - body, mind and spirit.
