The Kroger Co. has issued
a Challenge Grant to The Julian Center of up to $30,000 in
support of our domestic violence shelter. Supporters of The
Julian Center are encouraged to make an on-line donation today

first $30,000 raised for The Julian Center.
Laura understands
first-hand the importance of safe shelter. Several months ago
she fled with her children to The Julian Center.
Laura never thought
she’d need The Julian Center when she married her high school
sweetheart.
One day after her
wedding something went terribly wrong.
Laura’s husband
“announced” his rules.
- Do not
leave the house
- Do not
speak to your family
- Never make
conversation with the neighbors.
Laura became a prisoner
in her own home.
Eventually, her young
son began to repeat the abuse he had witnessed in his home.
Laura’s son threatened
to kill her. He began to physically abuse his sister.
Laura knew she had to
escape for the sake of her children.
She waited until she
thought her husband’s guard was down and she fled to The Julian
Center Shelter.
Laura is one of
approximately 1,300 women and children who will seek the safety
of The Julian Center’s domestic violence shelter this year.
Each day it costs about
$56 per person to provide shelter, three meals daily, case
management, medical and legal services, counseling, child care
and many other critical services. These services are vital as
women and children begin to rebuild their lives. A gift of
support will help another family like Laura’s begin to heal and
move toward a life free of abuse.
The Kroger Co.
believes in the power of women and children to move beyond the
violence. To help make it possible for hundreds of women and
children to start their lives over, the Kroger Co. has offered
to match the first $30,000 contributed to this effort - doubling
the impact of your gift!
Today, Laura and her
children are living in transitional housing at The Julian Center
while they plan for their future. Laura is working to get her
GED and driver’s license (yet one more thing her abuser had
denied her), the children are in school and they are all in
therapy to move beyond the years of abuse. Will it be easy?
Not in the least but Laura has goals – she wants a job that will
allow her to support her family and a home with a yard where the
children can play.
Thanks to the
services Laura receives through The Julian Center, generous
corporate friends like the Kroger Co., and the support of many
community members just like you; she has a good chance of making
these dreams a reality!
The Kroger Co. has
issued a challenge. Let’s help finish the job.
