Women leaving abusive relationships often sacrifice many of their personal belongings in order to get themselves and their children to safety. Clothing, furniture, and other necessary items are left behind as these families seek to escape from an abusive environment. Recognizing their need, The Julian Center opened Thrifty Threads, a thrift store stocked entirely by donations. Shelter residents shop free-of-charge for clothing and household goods. Since Thrifty Threads opened in 1997, it has provided more than 3,500 women and children from the Shelter and other non-profit agencies with the items they need to set up their new homes. Additionally, the National Council of Jewish Women operate "The Boutique," which sells donated designer clothing in a shop-within-a-ship inside of Thrifty Threads. Proceeds support college scholarships, other NCJW programs and the Julian Center. Volunteering at Thrifty ThreadsThrifty Threads also sells to the public and proceeds go to support The Julian Center. We rely in good part on volunteer help to keep the store operating. If you are interested in volunteering at Thrifty Threads, call our Volunteer Coordinator at 317.941.2212.
