From sofa to home

From sofa to home

Mary Ann found herself homeless after being sexually assaulted by the boyfriend of a friend she was staying with. After reporting the assault, she found herself homeless once again, moving from sofa to sofa. “One day,” she remembers, “I received a letter from an advocate at The Julian Center because of the police report I filed, and that letter ended up transforming my entire life.”

Mary Ann became a resident at The Julian Center shelter, accessed therapy and participated in programming to increase her employability and she worked with The Julian Center housing specialist to find sustainable housing. Today, Mary Ann is employed full-time and living successfully on her own. She continues to work with a Julian Center advocate. As Mary Ann says, “If telling my story can benefit The Julian Center or another woman beginning the same journey, then it’s the least I can do for all the love support and kindness they’ve shown me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
