Job Description:         Development Manager

Status:                             Part-Time

Reports to:                      Director of Development, President/CEO


Position Summary:

The Development Manager is responsible for the strategy and execution of the annual direct mail campaign, creation of appropriate and compelling solicitations & acknowledgements, writing & remitting reports to funders and conducting research in conjunction with the Mission Advancement Team under the direction of the Director of Development and President/CEO.

Primary Responsibilities:

 Direct Mail

  • Plan mail calendar
  • Solicit and acquire from program staff and other sources, compelling stories for solicitation and donor stewardship
  • Craft appeals (5 per year – 3 by mail and 2 by email)
  • Consult with designers in the creation of appeal letters, envelopes, remittance devices, etc.
  • Craft thank-you letters (4-6/year)
  • Acknowledge United Way designated donors
  • Craft and execute year-end acknowledgement for tax purposes to recurring gift and multiple gift donors.  Identify segmented lists for mailings (stewardship, appeals, etc.)

 Donor Research

  • Research individuals, corporations, foundations and faith-based organizations at the request of the DOD or CEO
  • Write clear, brief information reports and ensure that appropriate information is captured in Raiser’s Edge
  • With Director of Major and Planned Giving, craft, implement and manage a stewardship program designed to retain and advance donors


  • Maintain calendar of Foundation solicitations and bring upcoming opportunities to the attention of the MAT
  • Research new opportunities and present them to the MAT
  • Pursue appropriate foundation gifts and grants as requested
  • With assistance of program and financial staff, prepare and/or remit all required reports to funders


  • Assist with monthly report to the Board
  • United Way reporting

Consultation Services

  • Planning
  • Writing
  • Other services as requested

 Gift Clubs

  • Plan and implement a giving club strategy


  • Help maintain planning calendars for the Development Team
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of experience with event management or database administration, preferably in a not-for-profit setting
  • Raiser’s Edge experience preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent written and verbal communications
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team and to communicate with the team as needed
  • Good proofreading skills
